The Giver

Well, The Peal was fun...
The Pearl is done...
our next book is...
The Giver!
haha howdya like me poem??? Anyhoo, as you know now we shall be reading The Giver. So, what are your predictions about the book? Do you think it will be good? I hope so!!!! I hear it takes place in the future, so that should be interesting. I don't think it will end tragicly, but i don't know. I think the last two books have ended depressingly to match deppression class. That way we have experience with depression! (it must be some secret plot to get us deppressed to be prepared for Highschool!!!)
Anyways, maybe now that depression class is over we'll get good endings! Oh, you know what's really deppressing??? My Spelling!!!
Anyhoo, g2g!
lol!

Discussion 2

Make a list of contrasting emotions or elements in the novel so far.
There are lots of contrasting things in The Pearl, Mrs. Koning has talked about some of them. First of all, there's the contrast between the poor, indian part of town and the nice part of town, as well as the lives of the rich and the poor. Also, when Coyotito is stung Juana says the ancient traditional magic, and sends for a doctor. The doctors methods of healing him are different than Juana's-He uses a capsul of medicine, and she uses a poultice made of seaweed. Also there's lots of contrast between Juana and Kino's traditional beliefs and the modern beliefs of society and organized religion that they feel they must follow. Then there's the contrast when Kino holds the pearl of the world in his hand smashed by anger, as well as, I believe, a contrast between the pearl in the beginning and the end. It seems to change from a good thing to a bad thing, even though it's really the circumstances that change. There's contrast between the songs that play all throughout the book, family and evil, and the difference in the song of the pearl in the beginning and end.
As you can see, there's tons of contrast in this novella, all this and probably more that I haven't listed. If you notice any contrasting elements please comment!!! Acctually, comment anyway!

Glossary For The Pearl

Hey guys! I have another time and work-saving scheme to help us all out! You know the glossary we have to do? Well I was thinking we could devide up the work so that each of us can find only like 1 or 2 words and then share them here. If you guys want we could devide up at lunch and then find your word(s) and post the page number, definition, and quote here! It would save all of us a lot of work, and I think we should do it! (plus, she said we could!)
Well, that's my idea!

P.S. Comment if you're in!

The Pearl!

Hey Guys!
So as you know we recently started reading The Pearl (first reading assignment due today!)
So what do you guys think of it so far? I like it so far, I think the cover design is the best yet. I really like that it's based on a folk tale.
The mood is also really interesting. The author has a way of putting pictures in your mind, and you can imagine the scenes so vividly!
Don't you think it's interesting that in the third chapter, right when the priest shows up the song of evil starts playing? I think that's really ironic!
I think the songs in general are really interesting...
Keep commenting!

Discussion 1!!

Charles Dickens was a great writter but was he a great man?
To find out more about Charels Dickens it's nessesary to do a little extra research. I found several different sites with information about him-click
here to go to a wikipedia site, and here for another site with information on his life and links to other sites with more information.
I believe Charles Dickens was a good man, although there are things about him that are questionable. He had a loving wife, however after a while he considered her an uncapable partner, and in 1958 they got sepperated. He had a large family, 10 kids, and single-handedly saved Christmas through his novel A Christmas Carol. His book also inspired many people to give more generously and learn to act humanly to all..well, humans!
Keep posted for more info and sites comming soon to this post!
