Make a list of contrasting emotions or elements in the novel so far.
There are lots of contrasting things in The Pearl, Mrs. Koning has talked abou
t some of them. First of all, there's the contrast between the poor, indian part of town and the nice part of town, as well as the lives of the rich and the poor. Also, when Coyotito is stung Juana says the ancient traditional magic, and sends for a doctor. The doctors methods of healing him are different than Juana's-He uses a capsul of medicine, and she uses a poultice made of seaweed. Also there's lots of contrast between Juana and Kino's traditional beliefs and the modern beliefs of society and organized religion that they feel they must follow. Then there's the contrast when Kino holds the pearl of the world in his hand smashed by anger, as well as, I believe, a contrast between the pearl in the beginning and the end. It seems to change from a good thing to a bad thing, even though it's really the circumstances that change. Ther
e's contrast between the songs that play all throughout the book, family and evil, and the difference in the song of the pearl in the beginning and end.
As you can see, there's tons of contrast in this novella, all this and probably more that I haven't listed. If you notice any contrasting elements please comment!!! Acctually, comment anyway!
